Original 1870s Morris-Fawcett woodblock views of country houses in Great Britain and Ireland

We currently have available a large selection of original 1870s woodblock colour-printed views of country houses of Great Britain and Ireland produced by Benjamin Fawcett of Driffield, Britain's finest nineteenth century woodblock colour-printer.

These original views are priced at just £22.00 each, post free UK.



Each view is 8 x 11 inches (21 x 27 cms) in overall size including the margins with the view itself being approximately 5 x 7.5 inches (12.5 x 19 cms). All these original 130 year-old prints are in very good and unmarked condition.

The views are eminently suitable for framing; the illustrations immediately above and below show how they could appear when mounted and framed, depending upon your choice of frame.

Note that the frames shown are NOT provided; these views come unmounted and unframed.

They are also suitable for reprinting/reproduction in various formats should you wish to do this.



The historical importance of these woodblock views

The woodblock colour-printed views listed below were originally conceived and planned in the 1860s by the Revd. Francis Orpen Morris (1810-93), vicar of Nafferton in the East Riding of Yorkshire. The first 80 views were printed and issued in 1866; a further 160 were added over the next decade.

In the early years, the collection was published for its subscribers under different titles as the number of views in the series increased. In 1875, on reaching its maximum size of 240, the work finally became known as A Series of Picturesque Views of Seats of the Noblemen and Gentlemen of Great Britain and Ireland, under which title it remained until its final printing in 1893-94.

Throughout its life, the views, printed in 8 colours, were prepared and printed by Benjamin Fawcett of Driffield (1808-93), acknowledged as Britain's finest nineteenth century woodblock colour-printer.

Morris's Seats, as the series is now more usually called, is one of the very few historical pictorial records providing contemporary coloured views of a wide and representative selection of the country houses of the British Isles during the middle to late Victorian period. As such, the series is particularly valuable as many of the houses illustrated in it have since been demolished leaving the views included here as the sole remaining record of their appearance.

Although the views are undated, a few were modified during the publishing period to reflect architectural changes which had taken place; the known dates of the modifications in the printing blocks enable the individual views below can be identified as having been printed between 1875 and 1882.

Morris and his near-neighbour and collaborator on the series, Fawcett, died within a month of each other in early 1893. Effectively, publication then ceased and the work was never reprinted.
