1879: One of the first books written on road maintenance
Codrington, Thomas :
The Maintenance of Macadamised Roads.
London: Spon, New York: 1879. FIRST EDITION.
|

8.5 x 5.5 inches (21 x 14 cms). xii,172 pages, plus 16 pages of publisher's advertisements for other books. A very nice firm and clean copy in original brown cloth, the slightest of inoffensive fraying at the head and tail of the spine.

Little had been written in Britain on the maintenance (as opposed to the construction) of roads prior to this work. However, the Highways and Locomotives (Amendment) Act of 1878 devolved upon County Authorities half the cost of repairing the main roads in their area.
This in turn understandably led the authorities to an increased awareness of the necessity for examining the methods and costs involved. The author of this work was the General Superintendent of County Roads for South Wales.
The 13 chapters include: Construction; Road Materials; Cost of Road Maintenance; Measurement of Traffic and Wear.
