1941: 24 German wartime photographs of Devon and Cornwall

Generalstab des Heeres [German General Staff] :

Militärgeographische Einzelangaben über England: Objektbilder. [Area] 10. Südwestengland.

Berlin: [Department for War Maps and Surveying], 1941.

6 inches x 8.5 inches (15 cms x 21 cms). 24 large, full-page, black and white half-tone photographs, printed one side only, of (mainly) road and rail bridges, waterways and similar "targets" of military or strategic importance in Devon and Cornwall.

In near-immaculate condition in original green wrappers.

This work was published in Berlin in 1941 Nur für den Dienstgebrauch! (For Official Use Only!) by the Abteilung für Kriegskarten und Vermessungswesen (Department for War Maps and Surveying) within the Generalstab des Heeres (German General Staff), with the title Militärgeographische Einzelangaben über England : Objektbilder (Individual Geographic-Military Specifications across England : Object Pictures).

The photographs are of military and strategic "targets" across Devon and Cornwall (see the German index provided showing the various locations) - mainly road and rail bridges and viaducts. Every image is captioned with its subject and locality.

The photographs were compiled for the German High Command from a number of different sources, some pre-war, others during the war itself including some aerial views most likely from German wartime photo reconnaissance.

Many of the photographs were heavily retouched during the production process, possibly based on poor-quality hastily-taken originals. Notwithstanding this, these images have immense significance both as pieces of World War Two military history and as scarce items of local history for each area involved.
