1957: British preparations for nuclear attack by Russia in the Cold War

The War Office

Notes on Nuclear Warfare for Medical Officers

The [British] War Office, 5th April 1957.

9.5 x 6 inches, 24 x 15 cms. 52 pages, 6 figures, photographs and charts. Very good in the original light card wraps, hole-punched with cord tie as originally issued. Small and slight inoffensive stain on the top cover, otherwise immaculate.

Issued as "RESTRICTED ... The information ... is not to be communicated to the Press ...", this document was prepared with the assistance of the War Office Committee on the Medical Aspects of Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Warfare and its sub-committees, as a guide for medical officers across Britain.

Although issued in 1957 with a print-run of 6,000, the "restricted" nature of the document led to most copies being destroyed within a few years when the diminution of the Cold War between Russia and the West resulted in the threat of nuclear attack being perceived to have disappeared.
