1925: Photo album of the Southwold Players' production of "The School for Scandal"

[Frederick Jenkins, photographer] :

The School for Scandal Souvenir Album

Southwold: Frederick Jenkins, 1925.

A lovely 1925 photograph album, 8 x 10 inches, 20 x 25 cms, containing 20 original photographs, uncaptioned and neatly laid-down on brown card, of characters from Sheridan's "The School for Scandal", performed at the Pier Pavilion, Southwold, by The Southwold Players in May 1925.

In near immaculate condition, as issued, with - loosely inserted - an early (original?) hand-written 4.5 x 7.5 inches price card (shown lower down).

The album, containing no text or captions but complete in its own right, originates from the estate of a Miss (Peggy?) Jenkins, a daughter of the well known Southwold photographer Frederick Jenkins, one time Mayor of the town.  Frederick Jenkins' son, Barrett, is known to have been one of the cast members. Other members of the cast, photographed here, are known to include G.F. Williams, Miss Mary Debney, Miss Violet Southern, Miss Phyllis Swindell, Mr J.T. Kirkwood and Mr T.H. Wale.

Preliminary research through Southwold Museum at www.SouthWoldMuseum.org or FESPA (Friends of East Suffolk Performing Arts) at www.fespa.co.uk has revealed that this was the inaugural production of a newly-formed amateur group, The Southwold Players. They performed it for two nights only, May 29th and 30th 1925, at the Southwold Pier Pavilion with proceeds going to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.

Further research could well throw up further information of local interest.  For example, a contemporary newspaper cutting (courtesy Southwold Museum) shows that other members of the cast included G.F. Williams, Miss Mary Debney, Miss Violet Southern, Miss Phyllis Swindell, Mr J.T. Kirkwood and Mr T.H. Wale.

In short, a possibly unique and virtually irreplaceable item of Southwold theatrical history containing images most likely unpublished elsewhere - a fine piece of theatre memorabilia. UKBI rarity scale 6.
